Alabama Integrated Facility License 2022

Alabama is the 36th state to legalize medical marijuana, and in September the state will start receiving applications and issuing cannabis business licenses. This post will explain what an Integrated Facility License is, how to apply for it, fees, and requirements.

Back in February of 2021, Alabama’s government legalized medical cannabis, making it the 36th state to do so. Then last May, Governor Kay Ivey signed the Alabama medical marijuana legalization bill. This opened Alabama to the cannabis industry.

One of the licenses you may apply for in Alabama is known as the Integrated Facility license. We will explain what it is about and what are the main most important points in getting one.

What is an Integrated Facility License?

An Alabama Cannabis Integrated Facility License is an all-in-one business license that allows the applicant to perform most (if not all) of the business activities and processes in the cannabis industry within the state.

The license for a cannabis integrated facility business comprises many activities from other licenses, the applicant can fulfill the responsibilities of:

A cultivator; since it allows the cultivation of medical cannabis in Alabama.
A processor; since it allows the correct processing of medical cannabis, including packaging and labeling of medical cannabis products.
A dispensary; since it allows to dispense and sell medical cannabis to qualified patients and caregivers that show their respective Alabama medical marijuana card.
A transporter; since it allows to securely transport of medical cannabis between facilities.
Sell and transfer medical cannabis to a dispensary.

Requirements for a Cannabis Integrated Facility License

As with other Alabama cannabis business licensees, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) has set a list of basic requirements to apply for one:

Type of license
Name
Business address
Business email address
Business phone number
Social Security Number or Federal Tax Identification Number
Have no prior felony convictions

Additionally, applicants must submit a series of mandatory content and documents to the AMCC to ensure the prospective applicants and future licensees comply with their regulations. And since the Integrated Facility License includes growing and cultivation activities in the cannabis industry, the applicant must also comply with the regulations and requirements the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) may have.

Fees and additional costs

The Integrated Facility License in Alabama has more concrete information related to fees and costs.

As with other Alabama marijuana business licenses, the application may cost around $10,000 to $50,000. The AMCC also establishes a non-refundable application fee.

Since the Integrated Facility License is an all-in-one approach to the cannabis industry, the AMCC has set the following financial requirements specific to this license, including:

A letter of commitment or other acknowledgment, as determined by the AMCC, that certifies the applicant’s ability to secure a performance bond issued by a surety insurance company of two million dollars ($2,000,000)
Certified proof of at least two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) in liquid assets.
Certified proof that the applicant has the financial ability and stability to maintain operations for no less than two years following the application date.
At the time the licensee is issued, the AMCC requests the applicant has secured a performance bond.

Additional considerations

A licensee may operate up to five dispensaries, each located in different counties from the other unless the AMCC authorizes the licensee to operate a greater number if the commission determines the patient pool reached a sufficient level to justify this.
